The children have enjoyed using manipulatives to support their understanding of fractions. They were able to identify fractions that were greater and less than using visual representations. They were able to use a fractions wall to help them find equivalent fractions.

We explored the many characters within Oliver Twist. The children undertook a conscience alley to consider how Oliver felt about his friendship with Dodger. We explored if he was a criminal or a victim.

The children in Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed creating a dance, to the theme of The Greatest Showman, this half term. They displayed fantastic teamwork and super collaboration in order to achieve this. Pupils loved being the ring masters and acting out the commanding role. Whilst doing this, they had to create a series of movements, including using various props, to sequence their dance routine. At the end of the lessons, the children performed their routine to their peers where they would critically evaluate each other.

To demonstrate the stages of the digestive system, we copied the human digestive system. We mashed up bananas and cereal and moved it on to the final stage of waste. The children were very highly amused.

In geography, we have been learning about volcanoes. One such point was to understand how after an eruption, the lave is rich in nutrients and fertilises the land, perfect for growing citrus fruits. With this in mind, we tried some pink grape fruit and discussed what other citrus fruits could be grown.

We read the opening to Gulliver's travels, but stopped on the moment Gulliver awoke on the beach to discover he was tied down. Following this, we went on an adventure yesterday to have a Lilliputian picnic. We experienced what Gulliver may have eaten and discussed the size of the food. We used this experience to inform a short piece of writing in role of Gulliver.

This week is British Sign Language Week. This week is a flagship awareness week for British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language, celebrated every year in March to commemorate the first time BSL was acknowledged as a language in its own right by the UK Government on 18 March 2003. We are very lucky to have Mrs Gray, from Sefton’s Hearing Team, in school today working with all of our classes to learn some sign language.

We have been learning about volcanoes in Geography. Pupils have learned about the differences and similarities between shield and composite volcanoes. Pupils have thoroughly enjoyed watching video clips of Mount Etna and the explosive viscous lava. As part of their end of topic synoptic task, pupils were asked to either draw or make a composite volcano, showing the positive and negative factors about living near Mount Etna. What fantastic work!

Pupils had a wonderful time taking part in a cooking and food preparation session this morning. Pupils were able to select their vegetables and were taught how to safely cut food. It was lovely to see some pupils trying foods that they hadn’t previously tried.

Pupils have been learning about cuneiform, a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia c. 3200 BCE. Cuneiform was first developed around 3200 BCE by Sumerian scribes in the ancient city-state of Uruk, in present day Iraq, as a means of recording transactions. Cuneiform writing was created by using a reed stylus to make wedge shaped indentations in clay tablets.

Year 2 have had a wonderful half term exploring Expressive Art. They completely engrossed themselves into this topic, demonstrating such curiosity and depth. The children explored different artists such as Marla Zacarias, Van Gough and Cezanne. The children started by working with primary colours to mix and create new colours. Next, they explored different tools to help them manipulate paint on the page - using weird and wonderful objects to create different patterns and textures. We then joined our thinking together to begin to paint the wonderful landscapes of Keswick (we had been learning about in Geography).

This half term, pupils have been exploring stories through dance. Using movements and actions, they have designed routines and sequences re-telling the narratives within the tales. Pupils loved acting out George & The Dragon in particular. Pupils were able to use the bodies to tell a story and were able to work as part of a team to build their sequences. At the end of each lesson, pupils helped each other by reflecting on their peers work and suggesting positives and areas for improvement.
